hey guys. this may be a dumb question but here goes. can you use the support dvds like the ones that come with asus netbooks and a floppy drive to install xp? my old dell has an xp cd and i made an unattended floppy and just went that way. i find this way easier than nlite. i thank you for your help. it would be nice if it works out.

It **should** be as easy as ripping the dvd, using setupmgr to make a winnt.sif and then replacing the one thats probably already in /i386 with your new one.
Nlite is not needed; a basic unattended setup can be created with the tools already present on the xp installation cd.

ok. i will have to look. i will try the floppy rout as well. i will have to look at the contents of the dvd. thanks for the help. i just would like to know this for future refereence. the comp is running fine but i want to be prepared for when it does not.

Theres no need for a floppy at all, you can just put the file on the cd and it'll automaticly find it.
In actual fact, if the setup already had a sif on it, I'm not sure if it would take any notice of the one on the floppy or not.

hey all. maybe i'm being unclear here. my question is this. i have an asus eeepc 1000h with an external dvd reader and the support dvd that came with the system that i assume has an XP install on it. is there an accessible way of installing XP without any sited help? i am able to do it on my older dell using an xp cd and cd drive and flopppy. i was just wondering if i can do the same thing on the asus if need be? thanks for all your help. sorry if i repeated myself again but i want to be as clear as i can.

ok, sorry if i seem like i am dumb here but for the life of me i can not install xp by myself on a netbook. i have my asus eeepc 1000h. i think you have to go in the the bios to start the install of xp. anyone at all installed xp accessibly on an asus eeepc? if so, how did you do it? thanks :).

i would varify that the dvd that came with your netbook is actually a windows install disc. I strongly doubt it is and is most likely a restore image of the the system the way it came from the factory. don't know that image installs can be automated seeing as how they usually use some customized or propriatry imaging solution to creat the restore disc. Your best bet would be to set up the comp in a state you are happy with and make your own restore disc if it will let you and (unfortunately) you will need sighted help most likely to restore from the disc but atleast once the restore is complete you have everything ready to go for hte most part.

ok. i know for sure the dvd that came with it is just a windows image. oh well, i guess in this case i will need sited help but i can record us installing xp on here and do it that way. just listen to the recording and go that way. that is the only thing i can think of. thanks for the help.

I really don't see what your issue is. Except for having an external cd drive, installing xp on a netbook is just the same as it would be on your desktop.

yes true except these days computers don't come with standard windoes install disc they come with restore disc, which is a image of the computer the way it came from the factory with all the apps and drivers allready included with the install .. which means you can't exactly automate it like you can the standard xp install as far as I know. So yeah the idea of recording the installiation process and then using the audio the next time you have to do it is aclever one i must say hope it works out

my issue is automateing it or doing it accessibly. i am really new to this whole thing. i managed to install xp on my other dell latitude d610 using a cd drive and floppy. i do have an external drive for the asus. i know it may seem like a no brainer to all you techs but i am one of those people that needs instructionns or things dumbed down a little bit for me to get it. once i get it, i am good :). well i'll try the recording the install process or something. i really wished you could automate an image install. thanks for all the help.

Why do you need instructions? Just do exactly the same as what you did on the d610.
